Project Description

In 2024, the County of Elgin in partnership with the Municipality of Central Elgin is planning to reconstruct St. George Street (County Road 26) to an urban road standard from Wellington Road (County Road 25) to the CN railway crossing. The reconstruction project will include the replacement of aging storm water infrastructure, road base reconstruction complete with sidewalk and curb installation, and asphalt placement.

Construction Detour

A tailored construction detour for each phase will be in place throughout the duration of the project. During construction, sections of the roads will need to be closed to vehicular through traffic to complete the work safely, and in a timely manner, however, pedestrian access will be provided to the extent possible.

Elgin County would like to inform residents that construction on St. George Street (County Road 26) will resume the week of June 2, 2025.

What to Expect:
  • Paving is planned for the week of June 16, depending on the weather.
  • Residents will receive a notice (via door hanger) the day before paving is confirmed.
  • On paving day, driveways will be temporarily inaccessible for about 4 hours. If you need to leave during that time, please park on a nearby side street.
Remaining Work Includes:
  • Remove temporary asphalt curbs at catchbasins and raise catchbasins to finished grade
  • Finish sidewalk installation including tactile plates
  • Raise maintenance holes to finished grade
  • Street sweep and prepare roadway for tack coat
  • Complete surface asphalt and permanent pavement markings
This final phase of work is expected to take approximately three weeks and should be finished by the end of June.

Please note: This work is part of the final completion phase. Warranty coverage for the project will remain in place until 2026, but the upcoming work does not include any warranty repairs.

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as we wrap up this important project.
