St. George Street Reconstruction
Project Description
In 2024, the County of Elgin in partnership with the Municipality of Central Elgin is planning to reconstruct St. George Street (County Road 26) to an urban road standard from Wellington Road (County Road 25) to the CN railway crossing. The reconstruction project will include the replacement of aging storm water infrastructure, road base reconstruction complete with sidewalk and curb installation, and asphalt placement.
Construction Detour
A tailored construction detour for each phase will be in place throughout the duration of the project. During construction, sections of the roads will need to be closed to vehicular through traffic to complete the work safely, and in a timely manner, however, pedestrian access will be provided to the extent possible.

What measures are going to be in place to decrease speeding on this long piece of road?
Lynne Pensa asked 19 days agoWith the reconstruction of St. George Street, the County of Elgin reduced the lane width from an average of 3.7m to 3.3m. Research shows that narrower lanes and the addition of curbs can encourage lower driving speeds. St. George Street is posted at 50 km/h, with 20 km/h advisory signs at Hydro Road and on the curve north of the CN crossing. To further enhance safety, the County has added intersection warning beacons and 'children playing' signs due to Cowan Park and the area’s residential designation.
The County has implemented all options based on engineering best practices and design; however, we do not have the authority to enforce or ticket for speeding. Speeding concerns should be directed to the OPP non-emergency line for enforcement.
