Consultation has concluded

The County of Elgin is excited to announce that its Official Plan, adopted by County Council in 2024, has received final approval from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. This final step marks a major milestone in the County’s vision for growth, community development, and sustainable progress.

An Official Plan serves as a roadmap for the future of the County. It outlines how land will be used, where communities will grow, and how infrastructure, services, and natural spaces will be managed. With this final approval, Elgin County now has a clear framework to guide decisions on housing, business development, transportation, and environmental protection while ensuring a balance between progress and the County’s unique character.

It is important that we make it possible for more small parcels of farmland to be available for small agricultural businesses. At this point, the severance rules are extremely restrictive, and make it incredibly difficult to sell fields and parcels of farmland.

I would like to see the settlement area around Calton increased as well as the settlement area around Grovesend.

In line with the recently adopted Community Safety and Well Being plan, I'd like to see priority given to enhancing community walkability, specifically to Active and Safe Routes to School: adding bike lanes when doing road construction planning, ensuring sidewalks on routes, considering Wayfinding signs. As there is no Parks and Recreation Master Plan at the Elgin County level, Aylmer needs to prioritize an updated plan (expired in 2016) to provide accessible recreation opportunities for all age levels.

Reliable Internet and cellular services are essential to existing and future economic development and growth in Elgin County. Specifically in the rural, underserviced areas of the County. I would like to see priority given to future improvement/upgrades of these necessary services and include them as such in Elgin County's Official Plan.
