The County of Elgin will be completing a slope stabilization and roadway improvement project on Glen Erie Line (County Road 42) in the Municipality of Bayham, from Plank Road to the county limit at County Road 55.

This work will address erosion along the roadway, replace aging infrastructure, and improve roadside safety to help ensure the long-term stability of the road and surrounding creek areas.

Tentative Construction Start: April 2026
Anticipated Completion: October 2026

This project encompasses eight critical areas which require slope stabilization.

Current Phase

Tree removals have been completed to help prepare the area for construction. Work will resume in mid April, with the full closure of Glen Erie Line, east of Stafford Road (see map below), to complete the first slope rehabilitation area. This work is expected to take 1-2 weeks to complete, at which point the road will be re-opened.

Work will start on areas outside of regulated creeks, as some waterways have seasonal in-water restrictions in place to protect species during the spawning season. Work within those creeks will take place later in the season once restrictions are lifted.

Future phases will be communicated as the work advances.

Project Scope

Work along Glen Erie Line will include:

  • Culvert replacements and rehabilitations
  • Widening of over-steepened roadway banks
  • Installation of new roadside safety features, including guardrail
  • Bank and creek restoration work
  • Replacement and repaving of driveway culverts where required

These improvements will help stabilize the roadway corridor and improve safety for residents and motorists.

As a reminder, this phase of the project does not include recycling or paving of the existing roadway. It also does not include the rehabilitation of nearby bridges. The next phase of this project (pending County Council's approval), includes asphalt recycling and repaving, is tentatively scheduled to be completed in 2027.

Transportation Impacts

During construction, Glen Erie Line will be closed to through traffic and open to local traffic only.

At times, the replacement of cross culverts (culverts that pass under Glen Erie Line) will require full closures of the roadway. Residents will be notified in advance by the contractor and project consultant when these closures are required.

Please follow all posted signage, traffic control personnel, and directions from the contractor when accessing your property.

A contingency plan will be in place to ensure emergency services access at all times.

Up-to-date road closure information and detours will be available on Municipal 511: https://www.municipal511.ca/
